Alma Hartley
ADDRESS
Alma Hartley
Lecturer
Alma Hartley (she/they) obtained her Ph.D. degree with a concentration in political economy and globalization in Summer 2024. Their research interests are interdisciplinary and broadly include feminist political economy/structural intersectionality, social theory, social movements, and state violence. Their dissertation research examined the role of terrorism threat construction in the reorientation of the post-9/11 homeland security infrastructure toward domestic political repression in the US. The research deployed a historical sociology methodological approach which interpreted its phenomena of study as embedded within a perpetual, differentiated, evolving, and border-spanning colonial capitalist counterinsurgency program. Prior to studying at the University of Tennessee, Alma received an MA in Sociology from Boston College and BA in Sociology and Philosophy from Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. They live in Asheville, North Carolina and when not teaching or doing research, enjoy spending time with their partner and three kids and singing in her band, The Mourning Belles.
