Alma Hartley
Alma Hartley
Alma Hartley (she/they) is a 6th year PhD candidate in Sociology with concentrations in global political economy; critical race theory; and women, gender, and sexuality. Their research interests are interdisciplinary and broadly include feminist political economy/structural intersectionality, social theory, social movements, and state violence. Currently, they are completing their dissertation research, which examines the role of terrorism threat construction in the reorientation of the post-9/11 homeland security infrastructure toward domestic political repression in the US. Her research deploys a historical sociology methodological approach which interprets its phenomena of study as embedded within a perpetual, differentiated, evolving, and border-spanning colonial capitalist counterinsurgency program. Prior to beginning her studies at the University of Tennessee, Alma received an MA in Sociology from Boston College and BA in Sociology and Philosophy from Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. They live in Asheville, North Carolina and when not teaching or dissertating enjoy spending time with their partner and three kids and singing in her band, The Mourning Belles.
