Afsana Akter
MA Student in Criminology
Afsana Akter earned her LL.B. (2022) and LL.M. (2023) from the International Islamic University Chittagong, Bangladesh. She began her MA in Criminology at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in Fall 2025, to advance her expertise in crime, law, and social control, focusing on justice systems from national and transnational socio-legal perspectives.
Her academic interests encompass the sociological aspects of crime and deviance, including institutional corruption, elite deviance, and the structural mechanisms that regulate or prevent harmful behavior. She explores these issues within national and international governance contexts, alongside the legal and social consequences of U.S. immigration enforcement on marginalized groups.
Additionally, Afsana is interested in how media shapes public perceptions of crime, especially in normalizing or obscuring systemic deviance. Using an interdisciplinary and socio-legal framework, she aims to contribute to critical discussions on justice and accountability.
