OUR PROGRAMS

Undergraduates can major in Sociology and also can opt to concentrate in Honors Sociology; Criminology and Criminal Justice; Environmental Sociology; and Critical Race and Ethnic Studies. Undergraduates can minor in Sociology or Environmental Sociology.

The department also awards master’s degrees and doctorates. These must relate to at least one of the four specialty areas: Criminology, Critical Race and Ethnic Studies, Environmental Sociology, and Political Economy and Globalization. Students who are pursuing doctorates must have two emphasis areas, either both from the four specialty areas, or one specialty area combined with a foreign language; a formal graduate certificate from among campus offerings (such as interdisciplinary Social Theory; Women’s Studies; Cinema Studies); the Intercollegiate Graduate Statistics and Data Science minor or master’s degree; the Environmental Policy minor; or an area proposed by the student approved by the Graduate Studies Committee.
